Aspen Mays
Sun Ruins
September 7 - October 16, 2011
Reception: September 10, 6 - 9pm
New York
Golden Gallery is proud to present Aspen Mays as the first exhibition of our fourth year, and mark the first exhibition in our new Bowery/Chinatown location at 120 Elizabeth Street, New York.
In 2010, Mays arrived in Santiago, Chile as a Fulbright scholar, only five days before the massive earthquake shook the entire region. During her 365-day residency, Mays developed relationships with Chilean astronomers, where she had free reign over the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Chile's abandoned darkroom.
The artist had unrestricted access to unused vintage photographic paper & chemicals, as well as countless rejected prints, negatives, and ephemeral material from the lab's archive, ranging the latter half of the twentieth century. Such materials were physically and visually essential to the conception and production of Mays' recent body of artwork.
